SAMs

SAM stands for Source Activated Moment.

A SAM is the Source experience that is delivered to the viewer either as part of a video or as a standalone experience. A SAM is a combination of actions or assets, each managed via a Block system. Think of these Blocks as the fundamental building blocks, very much like a LEGO® set. Additional information on how each Block works can be seen in the Blocks section here.

What is a SAM?

There are 2 main parts to a SAM that can be edited or interacted with:

SAM Overlay
The element that appears on top of the content.
This can be a preview of the SAM's details, or its own interactive element. Most overlays are previews a SAM's details, but some non-preview SAM overlays would be ads, click-to-dial buttons, and links to social media.
SAM Details
The contents inside of a SAM, made up of blocks.
A SAM's details can be accessed by either clicking on its preview overlay (which would be shown on some content), or by visiting a direct link to the details. Not all SAMs have details.

SAMs can be used in 3 ways:

To enhance
Make your content more interesting by adding "meta"content, like trivia, articles, videos, etc.
To monetize
Earn revenue via content by enabling ads, adding affilliate links, and/or connecting your own products or services.
To advertise
Advertise your own content, products or services on other content that exists on the SourceSync platform.

Creating a SAM

Click the Resources drop-down menu and select the “SAM Builder” tab to get started.

This will take you to the SAM Library, where your SAMs will be managed. Folders can be created to help in organization, and folders within folders are also supported. Click the “Create” button to get started.

Give the SAM a name. This name is for organizational purposes and is not the name that will appear on the SAM itself. The slug will be automatically generated based on the name, but a custom slug can be entered here if desired. Slugs can optionally be used as part of the distribution of a video or a SAM. Slug names are unique per account.

Edit the SAM

TIP

If you want to create an overlay-only SAM, skip to the next section.

Once submitted, you’ll land on the first tab of the SAM Builder page. From here, you can choose from a variety of starter templates or build a SAM from scratch by selecting the “Custom” template.

A SAM is a combination of blocks defined in a specific order as part of the Kuration process. For example, when the “Location” template is selected and the “Edit SAM” tab is clicked, the blocks that make up that template are ready to be used.

As you modify the blocks, you’ll see a live preview of the SAM on the right-hand side of the SAM Builder.

Some other things you can do from here include…

  • Add, delete, and disable blocks
  • Change block settings
  • Rearrange blocks by clicking and dragging
  • Import blocks from another SAM in your library (ie; a social media block with all of your links pre-added)

Edit SAM Overlay

Click the “Edit SAM Overlay” tab on the left to get started. This tab controls how the SAM will look when it displays on top of a video and some of its behaviors.

As you fill out the fields, the live preview on the right will display the overlay as it will appear when published. Not all functions are represented in this preview just yet. Social Media for example, only appears on the SAM when published.

TIP

Keep the preview text as concise as possible. This acts as a call to action, so make it clear and engaging.

If you set social networks, users will be able to click-to-share to the social media platforms you specify. The link shared contains the video reference and the open SAM at that moment in the video.

Even Overlays can use the Block System

You can change even more about how the overlay looks and functions by editing the Display Block below. You can even add additional blocks or replace the preview with ads, images, videos and more.

Other SAM tips

Sharing a SAM

A SAM can be shared by itself as a simple URL. The link can be copied from the SAM library or while editing the SAM itself.

Duplicating a SAM

Sometimes it’s convenient to use an existing SAM as a starting point for creating another.

This can be done from the SAM library by clicking the 3 dots on the right of a SAM and selecting “Duplicate”:

Or, by clicking the “Save As” button next to the “Save” button at the top right of the SAM Builder:

SAMs can be organized via folders

Clicking the “Create New Folder" button will create a new folder and will default to the current active directory. Clicking the three buttons icon on each same (or all selected SAMs) allows them to be moved to any of the created folders. A folder can be created within a folder for further organization.
